The Lowdown on Fenix PD Series Flashlights

3 different types and sizes of flashlights

When looking for quality torches, the first thing you’d look for is the manufacturer of said torches. Usually, the longer they’ve been around the better their products are. But that’s not always the case. At least not with Fenix. Founded in 2004, this manufacturer of illumination devices has been featured in the New York Times.

From 2006 and Fenix’s rise to popularity has been immense, especially with a series of flashlights that are still quite popular today. If you are someone who wants extra functionality in their flashlight you should consider Fenix’s PD series. Especially, the PD35 series torches which are in a class of their own.

PD35 Series

PD35TAC

The tactical version of the regular PD35 flashlight boasts 1000 lumens and 5 different brightness levels plus a strobe mode. The 87 g heavy PD35 flashlight is powered by one 18650 Li-ion battery. You can get the TAC Fenix PD 35 flashlight with two CR123A batteries too. The maximum throw distance of the TAC is 200m.

What sets the TAC apart is the fact that it comes with a tactical mode made to operate the turbo, strobe, and low settings via the tail cap switch. You also get an outdoor mode which lets you operate all settings via the side switch and it makes the tail cap useful for the on and off functions as well as the torch’s momentary-on function.

PD35 V2.0

The PD35 V2.0 is a step up from the TAC. While the former offers the same number of lumens (1000) it has a maximum beam distance of 250 metres. You also get the same 5 brightness levels accompanied by a strobe mode. There aren’t special modes like the ones on the TAC but the V2.0 has a standard mode that does the same as the TAC’s outdoor mode.

What the V2.0 has that the TAC hasn’t is a battery level indicator that shows the charge left in the batteries. The PD35 V2.0 has a body made with a premium type HAIII hard-anodized anti-abrasive finish. You can also get various accessories with the V2.0 such as belt clips, rail mounts, diffuser tips, and more.

PD35 V3.0

If you want a more powerful Fenix PD35 LED torch than both the TAC and V2.0, then you should consider getting the V3.0 Fenix PD 35 flashlight. It offers 1700 lumens and a 50,000-hour lifespan. The maximum beam distance of the V3.0 is 356 metres while its output modes are of the same number as the ones on the TAC and V2.0. But the V3.0 PD35 flashlight comes with a small calibre reflector and de-convex lens. This 83 g heavy Fenix PD35 LED torch is lighter than both its predecessors although it comes with a 2600 mAh battery.

Other PD Series Flashlights

PD25

The PD25 weighs significantly less than the most powerful PD35 torch. The PD25 is also able to produce 550 lumens which are a lot less. But with small packaging comes clever functions. The PD25 has an intelligent memory function that lets the torch remember your last used mode and it sets it to that mode when you turn it back on again.

Alongside the PD25’s battery level indicator and strobe mode, there is a reverse polarity protection function. This function is what keeps you from installing the batteries improperly. The PD25 comes with a toughened ultra-clear glass lens covered with an anti-reflective layer and a body with an anti-abrasive finish.

PD36R

If you want something that can compete with the above PD series flashlights you can go for the PD36R. This torch is able to produce 1600 lumens and it has a beam distance of 283 metres. This LED torch from Fenix has the same memory function and battery level indicator as the PD25 while it comes with an anti-roll and anti-slip design.

The PD36R also has a stable power output thanks to its digitally regulated circuit ensuring an efficient torch that can last a long time. The latter is also possible thanks to the high-strength and oxidation-resistant aluminium the torch is made of. The PD46R also comes with a two-way body clip that is suitable for different lighting demands.

PD40R

To get the highest number of lumens from a PD series flashlight you should go with the PD40R. It has 3000 lumens ready to go and a beam distance of 405 metres. The PD40R is also IP68 rated which means it can survive in 2 metre deep waters. It also comes with a 50,000-hour lifespan and reverse polarity protection.

The battery capacity of the PD40R comes in at 5000 mAh while the torch only weighs 117g. You also get a USB Type-C charging port as well as a battery level indicator, a strobe mode, and a T6 aluminium body. There is also a unique rotary mode selection found on the PD40R which you cannot find on any of the above PD series Fenix torches.
